Guzman, the director of the crime news outlet Pulso Informativo del Sureste, was abducted from her home on June 2 by armed, masked individuals. Video footage of the home invasion circulated widely on social media. Local media reports indicate that the attackers attempted to dissolve her body in fuel-filled drums after her killing.
The Veracruz state prosecutor's office stated that forensic tests scientifically confirmed the recovered remains belonged to the journalist. Authorities have arrested eight people in connection with Guzman's kidnapping and murder. Among those arrested are four municipal police officers from Ixhuatlan del Sureste, who prosecutors allege provided resources, food, and logistical support to the criminal group responsible.

The organization reports that a total of 10 journalists have been killed since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, highlighting Mexico's status as one of the world's most dangerous countries for members of the press.
