The 84-year-old Republican lawmaker, who was hospitalized six weeks ago after a fall at his home and a subsequent mild case of pneumonia, is currently undergoing intensive physical therapy at a rehabilitation center.
In a statement released by his office, McConnell said he is working hard to regain strength and mobility, following his doctors' orders. He expressed regret for missing the annual Fancy Farm picnic in Kentucky this coming weekend. His office also released a recent photograph of him with his wife, Elaine Chao, and a statement from the Office of the Attending Physician.
The Office of the Attending Physician stated that physicians visit McConnell daily and that his rehabilitation includes multiple daily sessions designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls, noting that his history of polio is a significant factor in his mobility. The OAP confirmed he is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility. McConnell has missed 38 Senate votes since his hospitalization in mid-June. He previously announced he would not seek re-election and plans to retire at the end of his term in January.
