Luigi Mangione hearing sparks plea deal speculation

Rumors of a potential plea deal have been circulating since late June, when Mangione’s defense team met with federal prosecutors. Earlier, Mangione’s attorneys had indicated plans for a psychiatric defense citing “extreme emotional disturbance” in a sealed letter to New York supreme court justice Gregory Carro, but they abruptly withdrew this plan.

State prosecutors had previously stated they were aware of the possibility of a guilty plea in the federal case and were prepared to lobby federal prosecutors for a stiff sentence. In a letter obtained by The Guardian, state prosecutors argued that a federal guilty plea could “defeat a just outcome in the state prosecution” and urged the federal court to consider this consequence.

The latest development follows a hearing in state court that cleared the way for Mangione’s murder trial. The trial judge ordered that jurors would remain anonymous and an additional overflow courtroom would be provided, as Mangione’s court appearances have drawn large crowds of supporters.
