Judge orders Pentagon to explain testosterone policy discrepancy

This policy, announced by the defense secretary, aims to ensure male service members aged 30 and above have optimal testosterone levels for military performance. Those found with lower than normal levels can volunteer for TRT. The defense secretary stated this initiative is about keeping service members "on the leading edge of lethality."

However, Judge Ana Reyes questioned the discrepancy between this new policy and the existing ban on transgender troops, which cites the need for high health standards without special provisions or routine medical treatment. She specifically requested information on the Pentagon's basis for treating transgender men and other service members differently.

The Pentagon is required to address these questions, along with concerns about the cost and administration of TRT, before the next scheduled hearing on August 7. The policy has also drawn criticism from medical experts who warned that unnecessary or improperly prescribed TRT could lead to harmful consequences, including risks to fertility and long-term health problems, contrary to the goal of maintaining battle readiness.

Reports also indicate that the Pentagon has previously balked at the cost of gender-related hormone treatment for transgender troops.
