Gretchen Whitmer endorses Haley Stevens for Michigan Senate seat

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has endorsed U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary for the state's U.S. Senate seat. Whitmer, who faced Stevens' opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, in the 2018 gubernatorial primary, stated that Stevens "will do whatever it takes to get things done for people in Michigan."

Stevens expressed her enthusiasm for the endorsement, calling Whitmer a "champion for our state" and someone who "gets stuff done for Michigan." Earlier in the week, Whitmer had expressed concern about the "ugliness" of the intra-party rhetoric in the race, emphasizing her desire to ensure a Democratic victory in the fall.

In the 2018 gubernatorial primary, Whitmer had criticized El-Sayed's attacks on her, calling them "sexist." A recent poll of 500 likely Democratic primary voters indicated that 48% supported Stevens, while 41% favored El-Sayed. Approximately 10% of those surveyed were undecided, with half of them suggesting Whitmer's endorsement could influence their choice.
