Federal Labor MP Luke Gosling has been arrested by Northern Territory Police over an alleged assault on the Northern Territory's administrator, David Connolly. The incident reportedly occurred at a cultural festival in Darwin on July 18.
Police stated that Gosling, the 54-year-old federal member for Solomon, was arrested on Thursday morning following an investigation that began last week. He remains in custody, and no charges had been laid as of Thursday morning.
Gosling has previously denied any altercation with Connolly, describing the claims as "ridiculous allegations that I categorically deny." He has stated he had "no dealings" with Connolly beyond congratulating him on his appointment.
The alleged incident took place during the NT Thailand Grand Festival. Both Gosling and Connolly were in attendance. Gosling, a former army commando and special envoy for defence and veterans' affairs, has held the Darwin-based seat since 2016.
The Administrator is the King's representative in the Northern Territory, with a role equivalent to a state governor. Assaulting the administrator while they are carrying out official duties carries a maximum penalty of 14 years' imprisonment under the Northern Territory Criminal Code. A federal MP may be disqualified if convicted and under sentence for an offence punishable by at least one year's imprisonment.
