Fauci hearing revives COVID-19 policy anger

Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno recounted the story of a family arrested for not wearing masks and asked Fauci if he would apologize for the mandates that many states implemented following recommendations from Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fauci responded by invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when asked if he would apologize.

Earlier in the hearing, Fauci expressed his own frustration, accusing committee chair Rand Paul of having an "obvious obsession" and making "repeated slanderous comments." Fauci stated he would not engage further, asserting that Paul's aim was to see him imprisoned for his leadership role in the nation's COVID-19 response and to set a perjury trap.

The hearing underscored the persistent divisions over the effectiveness and justification of measures like lockdowns, school closures, and mask and vaccine mandates, as well as ongoing questions about the virus's origins. Republicans framed the hearing as a pursuit of accountability, while Democrats viewed it as a political vendetta.

Senator Rick Scott of Florida joined other Republicans in criticizing the COVID-19 response, arguing that the measures Fauci advocated had caused unnecessary damage to Americans' mental health and children's education, and prevented families from attending significant life events, such as funerals.
