Eight individuals have been arrested in the United Kingdom as part of an international investigation into a network suspected of organised drug-facilitated sexual assaults. The probe, led by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), was initiated after German journalists uncovered an online platform used to facilitate these crimes.
NCA deputy director Nigel Leary stated that the network is truly international, with members identified in dozens of countries across every continent. The agency has identified over 270 individuals linked to the forum and its offshoots. Leary described the scale of the operation as "deeply concerning," noting that drug-facilitated sexual assault is increasingly organised and enabled by digital platforms, making it a serious and evolving threat rooted in domestic abuse.
In parallel, EU law enforcement agency Europol, through its Project Medusa, identified 156 victims and perpetrators of drug-facilitated sexual assaults, focusing on intimate-partner settings within misogynist online communities. This operation also uncovered four new such communities. Investigators from Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, the United States, and Europol convened in London to share information on potential cases.
Helen Millichap, director of the National Centre for Violence Against Women and Girls and Public Protection, highlighted that the online nature of the abuse means its dimensions are changing. The alleged offences in the UK echo the high-profile case of French woman Gisèle Pelicot, who was drugged and raped for nearly a decade, leading to the conviction of her ex-husband Dominique Pelicot.
