A Manhattan federal court has released over $5.6 million owed by Donald Trump to E. Jean Carroll, stemming from a successful 2023 sexual abuse and defamation trial. Records show the funds were disbursed from a court-held account on July 9, one day after Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered their release.
Trump had contested the release of these funds since June 2023, following the Supreme Court's denial of his request to hear his appeal. Carroll's legal team promptly sought the judge's order for the disbursement. Both legal teams had previously agreed that Trump could deposit the jury award with the court's registry investment system (Cris) while pursuing appeals, with the understanding that the money would be released upon specific legal developments, such as the Supreme Court refusing to hear the case.
Despite the agreement, Trump's team argued that Carroll's team misinterpreted the provision for release, contending the money should remain in escrow as he sought reconsideration from the Supreme Court. In a separate 2024 trial, another Manhattan jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million for defamatory comments Trump made about her during his presidency.
