Months after the Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC) successfully negotiated for a zero percent import tariff on its polished diamond exports to the U.S., valued at over $2 billion annually, the group presented President Trump with a custom-designed, lavishly encrusted gold ring. The ring, crafted by Antwerp designer David Gotlib, features 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies, spelling out "T" and other patriotic symbols. Isidore Mörsel, president of AWDC, presented the ring to U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Bill White to give to President Trump, stating it was a symbol of partnership formed under pressure.
While the ring's value is less than other gifts received by the president, such as a $400 million plane, its presentation underscores the use of ostentatious gifts by those seeking favor. A White House official noted the ring had not yet been formally presented to Trump. The AWDC stated it provided input to the European Commission during tariff negotiations with the U.S. in 2025 but did not directly lobby the administration.
