Options trading research: if a SPY strangle hits a loss, what is the probability it recovers before expiration? This study isolates recovery odds across 45, 30, 20, and 10 DTE strangles at four loss thresholds. At a 0.5x loss, all durations recovered at least 59% of the time. At 1x the odds start splitting. At 2x, a 45 DTE strangle still has a 47% shot, essentially a coin flip, but a 10 DTE strangle barely has time left. At 3x the numbers get ugly fast. The key finding: time remaining is the most important variable in whether a loser recovers, which justifies tighter stop losses on shorter dated positions. ๐ tastylive: https://www.tastylive.com/ ๐ฐ Get Tom's pre-market analysis every morning: https://www.tastylive.com/newsletters ๐ FREE Options Strategy Guide: https://tinyurl.com/bp9ms763 ๐ฑ Follow tastylive on X: https://x.com/tastyliveshow Chapters 00:00 Recovering odds for losing trades: the question 00:22 Four loss thresholds: 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x initial credit 00:45 Using 16 delta SPY strangles across 45 to 10 DTE 01:39 Every study has caveats: IV, direction, and management removed 02:41 The 45 DTE results: 72% recovery from a 0.5x loss 03:35 Small losses are very common and usually recover 04:03 At 2x the recovery drops below 50% 05:07 Mike: do not keep your stops too tight on defined risk 05:33 Across all durations: 0.5x recovers well, 1x and 2x diverge 06:03 Shorter dated positions have much less time to flip 06:54 Individual names with earnings are a different animal 08:12 For 10-20 DTE consider a tighter stop than 2x 08:22 When the loss gets hit: average DTE remaining 08:47 A 10 DTE strangle hits 1x at 4.7 days left 09:08 Mike: roll to 30-45 DTE to improve recovery odds 09:33 Capital efficiency: redeploying into better conditions 10:06 Takeaways: recovery drops fast, time is the key variable 10:47 Early management matters because odds worsen near expiration #tastylive #research #stoploss #strangles #optionstrading #premiumselling #optionsmanagement #dte #tastytrade #optionseducation tastylive is a real financial network, producing hours of live programming every day.
