Soybean Yields Are Beating the USDA and Harvest Just Began

Soybean prices recovered after a WASDE-driven fall as China bought some 1.6 million tonnes of U.S. soybean in a single week. Bertrand Oesterle, StoneX VP of Clearing and Execution Sales, walks through the U.S. harvest, Chinese buying and the start of the South American planting season. The U.S. Department of Agriculture put the national soybean yield at 52.8 bushels per acre and crop conditions have stabilized back at the five-year average, while early harvest yields are running at or above that mark. Chinese purchases have pushed U.S. export commitments ahead of the pace needed to reach the U.S. Department of Agriculture figure, though the next tranche depends on a state visit that may not go ahead. In South America, Brazil has just started planting and current crop estimates run toward a potential record, while Europe contends with dry rapeseed planting conditions.
