Brazilian Beef Exports Now Run on China's Quota Clock

StoneX2 hours ago3:31

Brazilian beef exports are shifting earlier in the year, as China buys ahead of its import quota to avoid much higher above-quota tariffs. Larissa Alvarez, StoneX Senior Market Intelligence Analyst, explains how the quota system is changing when Brazilian beef export demand arrives. Chinese importers face significantly higher tariffs on volumes above the quota, which encourages them to secure beef earlier in the year. That has concentrated purchases in the opening months and left the traditional third and fourth quarter export window looking thinner. Brazilian feedlot operators are already facing tighter margins and higher replacement cost, and less predictable export timing now feeds into placement decisions.
