​‘We have no sustainability’: Australia’s fuel reserve gap exposed amid global conflicts

Motoring journalist Paul Gover says Australia has no fuel “sustainability” and relies too heavily on imports. ​“At the beginning of this whole situation, the federal government realised that we didn’t have the fuel stocks that we needed, but also there was a signature to an international treaty on how much oil reserve you’re supposed to have. We were nowhere near that number,” Mr Gover told News24 host Steve Price. ​“The other thing … we went from having five refineries to two, so we’re not as self-sufficient as we need to be in oil, and the way to get off that is always to have a buffer, not to be continually knee-jerk reacting to a short-term reaction.”
