United States to open two new military bases in Greenland under landmark security deal

The United States is poised to dramatically expand its military footprint in Greenland under a new Arctic security agreement. Washington plans to reopen the Cold War-era Narsarsuaq base and establish a new presence at Mestersvig on Greenland’s east coast. The deal is expected to be signed by the US, Denmark and Greenland at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. The expansion would mark a major shift from today, when Pituffik Space Base is the only remaining US military installation in Greenland. The move follows months of pressure from Donald Trump, whose push for greater US control of Greenland triggered a major NATO dispute.
