Thousands of people have rallied in Berlin against military expansion and a possible return of compulsory service. Police say around 5,800 people joined the demonstration at the Brandenburg Gate while organisers claimed a much larger turnout. The protest comes during heightened tensions over the war in Ukraine and broader European defence spending. Demonstrators accused Western governments of fearmongering over Russia and called for greater emphasis on diplomacy.
