Mr Trump and Republican lawmakers have long sought to charge Mr Smith, claiming the investigations were politically motivated witch-hunts. Senators accused Mr Smith of attending a 2024 Atlanta Hawks NBA game and meeting Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis, a figure central to Mr Trump's second indictment. ​The confusion happened when Mr Schmitt appeared to mix up the Atlanta Hawks with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. ​The women's college basketball match took place on the same day as the NBA match, but in Washington DC, not Georgia.
