FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing scrutiny after abandoning a proposal to create a new company, partly funded by private equity, to run major tournaments. The plan was met with criticism from a leading advisor who resigned, senior FIFA officials, and regional confederations in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, including Football Australia. Questions are now being raised about Infantino’s prospects for re-election as FIFA President, following other recent controversies such as the reinstatement of a suspended American player at the last World Cup after a phone call from US President Donald Trump, and the awarding of the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to Mr Trump.
