Doorbell camera captures terrifying moment NYC man is struck by lightning

A Staten Island man has survived a terrifying lightning strike caught on doorbell camera, getting back on his feet and walking away just moments after being knocked to the ground. Thomas Fahmy, 24, a staffer in Republican Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis's office, was struck about 15 to 25 feet from his car on August 27 while walking with an umbrella on his way to a dentist appointment. Doorbell Footage, credited to Stefanie Homan, shows him knocked to the ground by the strike. He remained conscious, got back up, and walked to a nearby home to ask for help. A woman heard him shouting and called 911. He was taken to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital. Fahmy told WABC he had waited for the weather to calm down before leaving. "I left the office a little bit early for that day to go to a dentist appointment and I waited until the weather calmed down, no heavy rain, and I said it's my time to go, but that happened, that one in a million chance type of an incident happened," he said. "But once the lightning struck me, the initial sensations that I had throughout my whole body were like tingling, numbness, pain. I feel this burning sensation," he added. He suffered no visible burns or major injuries and was released the next day after being monitored overnight. Congresswoman Malliotakis said in a statement she was "grateful that Thomas... is alive and well," thanking the good Samaritan who helped him and the hospital staff who treated him. The odds of being struck by lightning in the US in a given year are less than one in a million, according to the National Weather Service.
