Former Labor minister Mike Kelly discusses whether the NSW gun buyback scheme is distracting from the threat of Islamist extremism in the wake of the Bondi attack. “Absolutely, that unpacking of the ecosystem of terrorism and how it works, how it’s been constructed to disaggregate the former hierarchical nature of terrorism so that it is less vulnerable to our intelligence agencies,” Mr Kelly told News24 host Chris Kenny. “When it comes to the firearm stuff, the biggest issue there is the fact that we haven’t digitised the key data points and networked them in this country that would make an incident like Bondi impossible to happen.”
