Professor Jonathan Haidt's international bestseller The Anxious Generation gave thousands of parents evidence that, as many suspected, smartphones and social media are addictive, attention-draining, and in many cases, damaging to mental health. The book was a call to arms, laying out a framework for protecting children from the worst harms of social media, and fuelling momentum for regulators and world leaders to act. Since its publication in 2024, Australia has banned social media for under-16s. Other countries, including the UK, are planning to follow suit.
