US-China talks on AI ‘moderately encouraging’, but risks remain: Analyst

United States President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on Thursday (Sep 24), with talks on trade, artificial intelligence and the strategic rivalry between the countries in the spotlight. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, David Wroe, resident senior fellow and head of the AI and Security Program at think tank Australian Strategic Policy Institute, says that the Chinese president’s language on AI and the need to keep the technology under human control is “moderately encouraging”, but should be treated with some caution.
