Malaysia haze: ASEAN needs stronger collective accountability, says atmospheric scientist

Malaysian states hit by unhealthy air carried by winds from wildfires in Indonesia are stepping up measures against the haze. Selangor has banned open burning, while Sarawak is extending cloud-seeding operations after parts of the state recorded unhealthy to hazardous air quality. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, Jayaprakash Murulitharan, senior principal assistant secretary at GovTech Malaysia at the Ministry of Digital, and a Cambridge atmospheric scientist, says a gap remains in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) approach to transboundary haze – pollution crosses borders, but enforcement is handled by individual countries. He argues that ASEAN should consider how to preserve national sovereignty while establishing stronger collective accountability for cross-border harm.
