How Singapore can turn up the heat on haze-linked companies

CNA5 hours ago1:42

Singapore's move to use every legal, regulatory and economic measure to pressure haze-linked companies into action - in the words of Coordinating Minister for National Security K Shanmugam - marks a "step change" in strategy, notes environmental law expert Sean Tseng. Rather than rely solely on criminal prosecution, he says, the move now includes leveraging on Singapore's status as a financial and commercial hub. But, he adds, greater transparency in supply chains and land concessions is needed to close gaps in enforcement. Mr Shanmugam has indicated Singapore may amend or introduce new laws to ensure cooperation by companies. To date, preventive measure notices have been issued to 10 Indonesian companies linked to fires causing the current haze. #deepdivepodcast #singapore #haze Subscribe to our channel here: https://cna.asia/youtubesub Visit our website: https://cna.asia Download our app: https://cna.asia/app Get our editors' picks of stories via chat apps: Telegram: https://cna.asia/telegram WhatsApp: https://cna.asia/whatsapp Follow us on these platforms: https://www.facebook.com/channelnewsasia https://www.instagram.com/channelnewsasia https://www.tiktok.com/@channelnewsasia
