Rescue efforts are continuing after a powerful earthquake struck Japan's Kyushu island on Jul 28. Part of the Aeon Mall in Kumamoto collapsed in a post-quake explosion, trapping people inside. The shopping centre had reopened in June after extensive repairs following the devastating 2016 earthquake, including seismic reinforcements and other upgrades. Experts say the building's quake-resistant structure appears to have performed as intended during the shaking, with the explosion likely responsible for much of the damage.
