52 Singaporeans detained in China for pyramid scheme, consular assistance underway: Sim Ann

Fifty-two Singaporeans have been arrested and detained in Guangxi, China following a law enforcement operation against suspected pyramid scheme activities and related offences. Speaking to reporters on Friday (Sep 4), Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Sim Ann said officers from the Singapore embassy in Beijing and Consulate-General in Guangzhou have visited the detainees to check on their well-being and provide assistance. She added that the Singapore government does not interfere in the judicial process and investigations of other countries but emphasised that due process should be accorded. Ms Sim also warned Singaporeans to exercise caution when considering business or investment schemes, whether overseas or at home.
