As the economic data flow slows in the second half of this week, markets are set to be driven primarily by geopolitical headlines and oil price volatility. Two closely watched data points earlier this week demonstrated the impact of rising energy prices. Data out on Tuesday showed that US retail sales rose 1.7% month-on-month in March, while this morning’s UK inflation figures showed that consumer prices jumped 3.3% in the year to March. Both prints were forced up by higher motor fuel prices. Meanwhile, tensions between the US and Iran have pushed Brent crude back towards $100 a barrel, fuelling a broader risk-off tone across global markets, with the S&P 500 falling 0.6% yesterday to close at 7,064 and gold prices moving higher on Wednesday. Shifting sentiment is also impacting currencies, with signs of US dollar stabilisation.
