As Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to the United States puts China-US relations firmly back in the spotlight, artificial intelligence has emerged as another key area where the world’s two leading AI powers will need to manage both competition and cooperation. Beijing's message has centered on openness, promoting open-source models and arguing that developing countries should have a greater say in how AI is governed. Washington, meanwhile, has placed greater emphasis on competition, protecting its technological lead and restricting access to some of the most advanced AI technologies. Two different approaches to the same technology, but can the world find common ground, or are we heading towards competing rulebooks for AI?
