Taiping Ancient Town brings the Four Crossings of the Chishui River to life

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Long March. The Long March was an epic military trek from 1934 to 1936, during which the Red Army, led by the Communist Party of China, broke through encirclement by Kuomintang forces. In Taiping Ancient Town in Luzhou, southwest China's Sichuan Province, the immersive walking night show Crossing to Victory draws on local revolutionary history, turning the town's streets, the banks of the Chishui River and historic sites into a natural stage. The show is themed around the "Four Crossings of the Chishui River," an epic maneuvering campaign of the Red Army along the perilous Long March. From late January to late March 1935, the Red Army crossed the Chishui River four times during the Long March, repeatedly changing direction to break out of encirclement by Kuomintang forces. The story unfolds through the memories of a Red Army veteran portrayed by an actor. Crossing to Victory combines lighting, live-action performances and a walking-theater format to recreate historical scenes, including the Red Army repeatedly breaking through encirclement, local residents using wooden doors and planks to help build pontoon bridges, and young people from Gulin joining the Red Army. Audiences move through different parts of the ancient town as the performance unfolds, experiencing the story at close range.
