Between January and March 1935, 30,000 CPC-led Central Red Army troops faced 400,000 Kuomintang-led forces in pursuit and encirclement. The Red Army crossed the Chishui River four times, using swift maneuvers and sudden shifts to keep their pursuers off balance.
