Flooding and landslides hit south China as rescue efforts continue

Days of relentless rain have left parts of Hainan, the southern island province of China, grappling with severe flooding and landslides. In Wuzhishan, firefighters rescued two residents trapped by floodwaters on Monday morning, while other emergency responders carried out rescue and evacuation operations throughout the night. In the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday afternoon, rainfall in Wuzhishan exceeded 600 millimeters (nearly 2 feet), breaking the local record since rainfall records began in 1958. As of Monday, more than 55,000 people had been evacuated from at-risk areas across the province.
