Deal signed to expand US military presence in Greenland

The United States, Denmark and its autonomous territory of Greenland signed an agreement in New York on Tuesday to expand the US military presence on the strategic Arctic island. Under the wide-ranging deal, the United States will be allowed to modernize and expand its activities at Pituffik Space Base, which it already operates in northwestern Greenland, and to establish an additional defense area at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. The deal came after months of pressure from Trump, who repeatedly called for acquiring the Danish territory and did not rule out military or economic means. The proposal drew strong opposition from NATO allies and Greenlanders. Speaking after the signing ceremony, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, "This deal is good for the United States. It's good for Greenland, for Denmark, for the NATO alliance, and therefore also good for Europe."
