Beginning of Autumn

Beginning of Autumn (Liqiu) falls on August 7 this year, marking the transition from summer to autumn as the summer heat begins to fade across China and cool breezes arise. The solar term is divided into three pentads: cool winds arrive, easing the lingering heat; white dew glistens at dawn and dusk; and cicadas chirp plaintively. Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi wrote, "The hot weather comes to an end, as the cool winds start." Cool breezes enter the courtyard, squirrels frolic among the grapevines, and fruits give off their fragrance.
