OpenAI Considers Slowing AI Development

Brent oil slipped, easing this week’s sharp rally, after the International Energy Agency warned about a deteriorating outlook for consumption this year. US stocks and Treasuries caught some respite as oil prices eased, with traders looking to the August US inflation report for the clearest signal yet on whether the Federal Reserve will hike interest rates next week. Bloomberg has learned OpenAI is considering slowing down the development of cutting-edge artificial intelligence, and the ChatGPT maker’s CEO Sam Altman is hoping other AI companies will do the same. In a company-wide meeting this week, Altman told employees that OpenAI could potentially pace its AI development — perhaps in conjunction with several other AI labs, but that some may not agree to do so, according to people familiar with the matter.
