Young workers' wages: will the minimum wage rise go far enough? | BBC Politics Live

BBC Parliament1 hour ago8:40

The minimum wage is set to rise, but the BBC understands that 18 to 20-year-olds are expected to receive a smaller increase than in recent years. Pay for younger workers will still rise alongside the increase for those aged 21 and over. However, the uplift is expected to be lower than in the previous two years, when Labour increased rates as part of its pledge to phase out what it called "discriminatory age bands" and move towards a single adult minimum wage. On Politics Live, PoliticsJOE Political Editor Ava-Santina Evans argued that a slower rise in pay for younger workers could leave many living on the poverty line. Conservative MP Sir Bernard Jenkin disagreed, saying: "Socialism doesn't work. Planned economy is failed... I think it is socialism to try to control people's wages." Vicki Young was also joined by Labour MP David Pinto-Duschinsky to discuss the government's plans and what they could mean for young people entering the workforce.
