Why Togo wants the world to redraw its maps

Togo has secured overwhelming support at the United Nations for a resolution promoting more geographically accurate world maps, challenging the widely used Mercator projection. The Mercator projection makes areas closer to the poles appear much larger while distorting the relative size of Africa and other regions. Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey says distorted maps can reinforce inaccurate perceptions across generations. The government plans to introduce new maps in schools by the end of the year. The resolution passed despite opposition from the United States, which criticised the initiative as an “ideological agenda”. Russia backed the move, describing it as a victory for African unity and a challenge to historical injustice.
