US President Donald Trump has announced on Truth Social a "crushing economic operation" against Iran, describing it as "economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale." He warned that any country aiding Iran will face "tremendous economic consequences." In an interview with Al Jazeera, Professor Nader Habibi of Brandeis University said China is the primary target of the new sanctions, followed by Iraq and Turkiye. He said the UAE's recent trade embargo on Iran was likely "induced" by the US after conversations between officials. Habibi said enforcement would be a challenge, particularly with China, as the Chinese government has warned its entities not to cooperate with US sanctions, while ground trade with Turkiye and Iraq would be difficult to fully stop. He said Trump lacks a "long-term strategy" and is turning to economic pressure after the military campaign proved "very costly", with some US ammunition stockpiles reportedly exhausted. He said the Iranian economy is already "hurting" and additional measures would cause "even more pain and suffering."
