US-China AI talks and unchecked power: Analysis

Days after President Donald Trump said he does not want to integrate AI efforts with China, despite the two countries agreeing at their Washington summit to a "super intelligence dialogue" and a communication channel for AI incidents, Ramesh Srinivasan, a professor at UCLA's Department of Information Studies, says the technology has effectively gone out of control. Srinivasan says even the engineers building these systems don't fully understand how they function, pointing to recent cases of rogue AI agents, including one that targeted Australia's medical portal and OpenAI agents that probed US government websites. He argues the anxiety around AI and data centres reflects deeper inequality, noting one person's wealth now equals that of roughly 180 million Americans, and warns the technology is also driving up utility costs and polluting water and soil. Srinivasan is skeptical Trump's administration, tied to tech figures like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, will meaningfully cooperate with China or accept regulation.
