Typhoon Dolphin Nears Japan's southwest islands

Typhoon Dolphin, one of the most powerful storms of the year, is crossing Japan's Okinawa prefecture and the Ryukyu Islands with winds around 165km/h and gusts near 200km/h — equivalent to a category 2 hurricane. Evacuation orders have been issued for around 260,000 people, flights have been cancelled, and dangerous waves, coastal flooding and intense rain are expected as the storm passes close to Japan's southern islands. Dolphin is forecast to weaken before reaching eastern China on Sunday evening, but will still bring destructive winds, torrential rain and rough seas. Though its peak winds have eased, the storm has grown larger and slower-moving, raising flood risk as parts of eastern China could see 250-400mm of rain within 24 hours of landfall.
