Two mass shootings in South Africa kill 27 as police hunt suspects

At least 27 people have been killed and more than 20 wounded in two separate mass shootings in South Africa near Johannesburg and Cape Town, with police searching for eight suspects. In the first attack, several armed men reportedly arrived at a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, and opened fire on people outside before entering the venue and continuing to shoot. Police say the attackers were armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. Hours later, another shooting took place at an entertainment venue in Lwandle township near Cape Town, killing several people. Police say the motive remains under investigation, although business rivalry has been raised as a possible factor in the Cape Town attack. The shootings came days after 11 people, including a pregnant woman, were killed at a house party near Durban. South Africa continues to struggle with organised crime, illegal firearms and high levels of gun violence, while critics say stronger policing and action against corruption are needed.
