Al Jazeera’s Jack Barton reports from the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea, where tensions remain high as the peninsula is still technically at war. Minor flare-ups are routine, with South Korean troops recently firing warning shots after North Korean soldiers briefly crossed into the South. The US and South Korea hold annual military drills to guard against a full-scale invasion. This year’s Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise involves US forces and about 18,000 South Korean troops. But as the exercises began, US President Donald Trump said they were a waste of money and suggested future drills could be scaled back because of his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
