Spain And Italy Clash Over Border Controls After Deadly Ceuta Migrant Crisis

Al Jazeera English4 hours ago0:57

Spain has threatened reciprocal measures against Italy after Rome imposed temporary border controls following a surge in migrants entering the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. The dispute comes as forensic teams continue identifying dozens of migrants who died attempting to swim around the border fence into Ceuta. Spanish authorities say police have dismantled one of the largest criminal smuggling networks operating across the Mediterranean. More than 1,300 migrants remain in overcrowded reception centres in Ceuta, while Spain plans to transfer some to the mainland in the coming weeks. Officials say unaccompanied children will receive individual assessments, legal protections and, where possible, family reunification. The developments have renewed debate over migration, border security and the European Union's response to growing pressure along its southern frontier.
