Race to reach 100+ workers trapped in Nepal's flooded tunnels: Explainer

In Nepal's Rasuwa district, rescuers are racing to reach more than 100 workers believed to be trapped inside hydropower tunnels sealed by mud after Wednesday's flash flood, bringing the total number of hydropower workers still missing nationwide to 933. Specialised tunnel-rescue teams from India and China have joined the operation. The workers were at the Upper Trishuli 3A and 3B stations on the Trishuli River, connected by tunnels stretching more than seven kilometres. Heavy concrete structures shielded them from being swept away, but floodwaters packed the tunnel entrances with mud, rock and sludge, effectively sealing them shut.
