New US sanctions will hurt Iran but won't have an immediate effect: Analysis

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced plans to isolate the Iranian economy through targeted measures to be revealed on Monday, warning allies: “You're either with us or against us.” He said the US would use its “full might and force” against countries doing business with Iran. Iran's President said returning to the terms of the memorandum of understanding is the “only way forward”, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the threats, saying it is “the same movie they keep playing over and over again.” In an interview with Al Jazeera, former Pentagon official David Des Roches said Iran's rhetoric is aimed at its domestic audience, noting the country's official inflation rate is 85 percent and that recent security shake-ups are “not what a country that's winning does.” He said the US economic measures will have a “long-term deleterious effect” but not an immediate one, and suggested sanctions could target Chinese government officials enabling trade with Iran.
