New US sanctions threaten the ICC as Europe weighs how far to defend the court

The United States is stepping up its campaign against the International Criminal Court, with new sanctions threatening to disrupt its operations. The ICC prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Trump administration accuses it of targeting American and Israeli officials. The sanctions follow earlier US measures against the court’s president, judges and senior prosecutors. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the latest move will restrict transactions with the ICC. Several European countries, alongside Canada and Japan, have reaffirmed their support for the court. A joint statement said the sanctions, if implemented, “will have a significant impact on the Court’s work, its dedicated staff and their families”. The dispute fell on the same day former ICC judge and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay was announced as this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Al Jazeera’s Lou Browne reports.
