New satellite images reveal vast destruction across Gaza

New satellite images show the scale of destruction caused by Israel’s war on Gaza, with what remains of neighbourhoods visible from space. In some areas, the devastation stretches four kilometres and has increased during what is meant to be a ceasefire. In August, the UN Satellite Centre estimated that the number of destroyed structures had grown by 9 percent since a US-brokered truce nearly a year earlier. Comparisons between images from 2022 and now show entire sections of Rafah in southern Gaza have been erased. In Gaza City, much of the Islamic University of Gaza, once a cornerstone of education, has been reduced to rubble, with displaced families sheltering in tents. Gaza’s port, once the heart of its fishing industry, is also covered by rows of temporary shelters. Similar scenes are visible along much of the coastline, while Israeli attacks have forcibly displaced 1.9 million Palestinians. The images do not show the human cost of the war, but reveal its scale and how dramatically Gaza’s landscape has been transformed. Al Jazeera’s Lina Abu Akleh explains.
