Netherlands public sector strike halts transport over welfare cuts

Public sector workers across the Netherlands are taking part in a 24-hour strike to protest government welfare cuts linked to plans for increased defence spending. The walkout has disrupted trains, buses and ferries, leaving Amsterdam Central Station largely deserted and affecting commuters as well as international travellers. Trade unions argue that cuts to benefits and social support could push workers and vulnerable households into poverty. Union leader Patrick Fey says the strike is necessary to protect the social safety net, while opposition politician Jimmy Dijk of the Socialist Party criticises the government for prioritising billions in NATO and defence spending over welfare. The disruption has also left tourists and other travellers facing major transport delays as much of the country's public transport network is affected. The strike highlights a growing debate in the Netherlands and across Europe over how governments should balance rising defence spending with social protection.
