Meta agrees to settlement, platform changes in youth addiction case

Meta has proposed a settlement of up to $17bn after 51 US attorneys general accused Facebook and Instagram of being designed to addict young users, harming their mental and physical health. The agreement includes daily time limits for teenagers, overnight blocks, disabled notifications during school hours, age-verification measures and a ban on cosmetic-procedure filters. About $5bn will be withheld until rival platforms adopt similar safeguards. The deal still requires court approval, and Meta admits no wrongdoing. Al Jazeera’s Eva McKend reports from Washington, DC.
