The future of the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon remains uncertain as its mandate approaches expiry on December 31, 2026, following opposition to its renewal by the United States and Israel. Lebanon is seeking to maintain an international peacekeeping presence, warning that UNIFIL's withdrawal could create a security vacuum and undermine efforts to extend state authority in the south. The mission, which has operated for nearly five decades, also provides essential humanitarian assistance, including medical care, mine clearance and aid deliveries to vulnerable communities. UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix says the UN is preparing for a gradual withdrawal but needs clarity from the Security Council on what, if anything, will replace the force. Lebanon hopes any alternative international presence will operate under a UN mandate. The uncertainty comes as Israeli forces continue to occupy parts of southern Lebanon, while UNIFIL has been sidelined from recent ceasefire arrangements.
