Israeli settlers besiege Palestinian homes in the occupied West Bank

Dozens of Israeli settlers attacked a home in the West Bank village of Qusra, throwing stones as residents sheltered inside, who were then tear-gassed and detained by Israeli forces rather than protected, despite international law obligating occupying forces to do so. Homeowner Luay Bayruti says he and six others, including a worker, were handcuffed in an army vehicle for over 40 minutes and beaten. Residents say soldiers let the settlers leave, but not before they set fire to nearby land. Three houses nearby have been besieged for weeks in what one family calls a campaign to force them out. Louai Abu Ridi says they stay up watching security cameras and are barred from seeing family, visiting the village or shopping, made worse after the military declared the area a closed military zone, trapping them with dwindling food and medicine. It's part of a wider pattern under the Israeli government, including a farm attack in Hebron and an assault on a Palestinian couple and a US TV crew in Jalud. The UN says settler violence has displaced more than 2,200 Palestinians in recent months, with convictions rare. Al Jazeera's Nargess Moballeghi reports.
